Al-Abwa

The village between Makkah and Madinah where the Prophet's mother Aminah died and was buried when he was six.

History and Seerah

The Sirah reports that Aminah was coming back from visiting her family in Madinah with her young son when she died at al-Abwa. Years later the Prophet ﷺ visited his mother's grave and wept, and those with him wept, and he said: "I asked my Lord's permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, and He did not permit me; I asked permission to visit her grave, and He permitted me" (Muslim 976). The grave is not marked today.
