Hajj, day by day (Tamattu') · 10 steps

Hajj 2027, day by day

This covers Hajj al-Tamattu', the most common type. You do Umrah first, leave ihram, then enter ihram again for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah. The other types are Qiran (Umrah and Hajj in one ihram) and Ifrad (Hajj only). Follow your group scholar for your situation.

Day of Arafah: Saturday, 15 May 2027What to pack: the packing checklist
  1. Step 1 of 10

8th Dhul Hijjah: Ihram for Hajj

On the morning of the 8th (Yawm al-Tarwiyah), take a bath, put on ihram clothes at your accommodation in Makkah, and say: "Labbayka Allahumma hajj." The same ihram restrictions as Umrah apply. Keep saying the Talbiyah.

  2. Step 2 of 10

    8th: Go to Mina

Go to Mina after the morning prayer. Pray Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha at Mina, each shortened (Dhuhr 2, Asr 2, Isha 2) but at their normal times, not combined. Spend the night.

  3. Step 3 of 10

    9th: The Day of Arafah

After sunrise on the 9th, go to Arafat. This is the main pillar of Hajj — the Prophet ﷺ said: "Hajj is Arafah." Pray Dhuhr and Asr combined and shortened at Namirah or wherever you are. Spend the afternoon making dua and dhikr facing the Qibla. You must be anywhere inside Arafah's boundaries until after sunset. All of Arafah is a place of standing; you do not need to climb the hill.

  4. Step 4 of 10

    Night of the 10th: Muzdalifah

After sunset, leave Arafah calmly and go to Muzdalifah. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined when you arrive (Isha shortened to 2 rak'ah). Sleep under the open sky. Collect 7 pebbles (or more for all three days). After Fajr, make dua at al-Mash'ar al-Haram. Leave for Mina before sunrise.

  5. Step 5 of 10

    10th: Stoning Jamarat al-Aqabah

On the 10th (Yawm al-Nahr / Eid), throw 7 pebbles at Jamarat al-Aqabah (the largest pillar, closest to Makkah). Say "Allahu Akbar" with each throw. Stop the Talbiyah when you begin stoning.

  6. Step 6 of 10

    10th: Sacrifice (Hady)

The Tamattu' pilgrim must offer a sacrifice (a sheep, or one-seventh of a cow or camel). This can be arranged through authorized programs before or during Hajj. If you cannot afford it, fast 3 days during Hajj and 7 when you return home (Quran 2:196).

  7. Step 7 of 10

10th: Shave or trim the hair

Men shave the head (better) or trim. Women cut a fingertip's length. Now you have the first tahallul: everything becomes permitted except marital relations.

  8. Step 8 of 10

    10th: Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i

Go to Masjid al-Haram and perform Tawaf al-Ifadah (7 laps) — this is a pillar of Hajj. Then do Sa'i (7 laps between Safa and Marwah). After this, all ihram restrictions end completely. You can delay this to the 11th or 12th if needed.

  9. Step 9 of 10

    11th–13th: Days of Tashreeq

Return to Mina and spend the nights. Each day (after Dhuhr), stone all three Jamarat in order: the small, the middle, then the large (al-Aqabah), 7 pebbles each. Make dua after the small and middle pillars (not the large). If you are in a hurry, you may leave after stoning on the 12th before sunset.

  10. Step 10 of 10

    Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada')

Before leaving Makkah, perform Tawaf al-Wada' (7 laps). This is the last thing you do in Makkah. A woman on her period is excused from it (Bukhari 1755).

Good to know

The order on the 10th is flexible. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about changing the order of stoning, sacrifice, shaving and Tawaf, and he said: "No harm" (Bukhari 83).

The elderly, the sick and those with a valid excuse may appoint someone to stone on their behalf.
