Maqam Ibrahim

MakkahInside the mosqueMasjid al-Haram

The stone Ibrahim (peace be upon him) stood on to build the Kaaba, kept in a gold and glass case facing the Kaaba's door.

History and Seerah

Ismail brought this stone for Ibrahim to stand on as the walls rose (Bukhari 3364). Allah commands taking the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer (Quran 2:125). After Tawaf the Prophet ﷺ went to it, recited that verse and prayed two rak'ahs with the station between him and the House (Muslim 1218).

Visitor tips

Pray the two rak'ahs of Tawaf behind it if there is room; when it is crowded, anywhere in the mosque is fine. Don't touch or wipe the case for blessing: nothing in the Sunnah supports it.
